Skiing Chamonix Mont Blanc

Les Grands Montets - 3mins from the Chalet

No wonder it's world famous!  Les Grands Montets, 3 minutes walk from Chalet Mont Blanc, offers 2100m of vertical drop with varied, challenging terrain for experienced skiers and snowboarders, and stunning views for those who just want to take a peak. Though the blue runs on Les Grands Montets are considered to be the equivalent to red runs anywhere else, if you are looking for long, exciting descents, you're in the right place. On the Mont Blanc Unlimited ticket, you have access to the top telecabine (otherwise 10e extra) that takes you atop a glacier with a glorious black run back down to Lognan. There are two wonderful independant mountain restaurants serving croutes, tartes and vin chaud, one at the top of the top telecabine of les Grands Montets and the other - Refuge du Lognan - a red-run ski down from the Herse chairlift.

Chamonix's Other Fantastic Ski Areas

The different ski areas ranging the Chamonix valley mean there is great skiing and snowboarding for everyone, from the placid to the bold. It's just five minutes drive from Chalet Mont Blanc to Flegere ski area, linked to Brevant (closer to Chamonix town centre). Likewise Argentiere to the Domaine du Balme (Vallorcine/Le Tour) takes minutes by car, bus or train (all easy access). Both Brevant-Flegere and Domain du Balme, as well as Les Houches, offer mellower blue and red pistes as well as some excellent free-riding. There are pleasant lower level areas for green-run beginners as well as excellent ski-school provisions for kids.

Vallee Blanche & High Mountain Ski Guiding

Taking a guided glacial ski tour (using a UIAGM qualified guide) down the Vallee Blanche is a famous "dream trip" for any proficient skier or boarder. Accessible from the Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix centre, it’s adrenaline filled as you ski only meters away from the icy bellies of gaping crevasses, with sparkling glacial formations all around the alienesque white glacier landscape.

Likewise, it’s recommended to hire a guide to take you to the most spectacular and sometimes challenging places from the top lift station of Les Grands Montets, which, at 3300m, would be world-famous in its own right, were it not in the nearby shadow of the Aiguille du Midi (3842m!)

Chamonix Ski Pass and Ski Hire

Chamonix lift passes winter season are available online, as well available to buy in Chamonix town centre and at Les Grands Montets (only 5 minutes away from Chalet Mont Blanc) and the other ski areas. This season the nearby resorts of Swiss Verbier and Italian Courmayeur are included on the “Mont Blanc Unlimited” ski pass, which also offers access up Aiguille du Midi (which leads to the Vallee Blance), the top of Les Grands Montets (black runs and glacier) and Montenvers Train, not to mention other goodies. NB Verbier is exclusively included on Mont Blanc Unlimited passes for six days or more. Check when you buy your pass@  Chamonix Le Pass offers all the pistes of Brevant-Flegere, Domaine des Balmes (Vallorcine/ Le Tour) and almost all of Les Grands Montets. It's more cost effective if you just want to cruise around the non-glacial, and nevertheless fantastic, terrain of the main Chamonix ski areas.

Ski hire and mountain sports equipment rental in Argentiere is easy, with Sportech and Stamos Sport in Argentiere village and Sanglard at the base of Grands Montets.

Other Winter Activities in Chamonix

If you are not skiing or snowboarding in Chamonix, but you like to get active, there are loads of other options, such as husky-sledding at Le Tour, ski jeering (skiing towed behind a horse) in Vallorcine and Les Houches, cross country skiing around the idyllic valley trails, or snow-shoeing all sorts of guided tours that tend to finish up with warming vin chaud in seemingly remote mountain huts.

At the end of a hard day's skiing and snowboarding, there's plenty of apres ski and regular live music in Argentiere, not to mention a plush new restaurant opening this season. If you need a good massage to relax and rejuvenate tired limbs, then feel free to call up ChamoFix - Chamonix Massage Fix to come over to Chalet Mont Blanc.

Ski Trips from Chamonix
